2007 Chardonnay "Old Vines" Santa Lucia Highlands
- Item #: 07CH
Our fifth and final vintage of sourcing our fruit from the same few rows of 40 year old vines. Grown on the highest elevation 'B' block section of the Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, these old Wente clone plantings are on there original roots, not grafted over as with nearly all of the vines in the world. They were in serious decline because of this and ripen more slowly than their younger counterparts; this section of the vineyard was replanted after the 2007 vintage. Here's an excellent description of the wine, as reviewed by Tanzer's International Wine Review:
Full gold. Deeply pitched, smoky aromas of peach nectar, tangerine, honey and herbs, with building florality and a hint of anise. Lush and creamy but assertive, offering gently sweet pit fruit and honey flavors leavened by a note of bitter blood orange. Shows red wine-like texture, with serious finishing power and lingering smoke and saffron notes. There's something about this wine's depth, power and smokiness that reminds me of a vin jaune from the Jura, but the fruit here is fresh. Wild and singular, and a great match with rich, creamy fish, offal (sweetbreads, especially) or poultry dishes. 92
